Finding Balance: Reflexology for the Autumn Equinox

There's a moment each year, right around the 22nd or 23rd of September (My birthday!), when day and night sit in perfect balance. The Autumn Equinox or Mabon, as it's known in the old wheel of the year marks the turn from the brightness of summer into the quieter, softer months ahead.

If you've felt it already, you're not imagining it. The light is changing. The mornings are cooler. And for many of us, that shift outside stirs something inside too, a pull to slow down, even as life often asks us to keep speeding up.
Why the Equinox Can Feel Unsettling
Balance sounds peaceful, but the moment of balance is also a moment of change and change, even gentle change, can leave us feeling a little untethered. You might notice:-
- A sense of overwhelm as routines shift with the season
- Tiredness that a good night's sleep doesn't quite fix
- A quiet urge to withdraw, nest, or simply do less
- Emotions sitting closer to the surface than usual
None of this means anything is wrong with you. It means you're paying attention to a very old rhythm.
How Reflexology Can Support You Through the Turn of the Season
Reflexology works with your body's own capacity to find balance which makes it a beautiful companion to a season that's all about balance. During a session, gentle pressure on the feet helps calm the nervous system, easing the fight-or-flight state so many of us carry without realising it.
For women navigating hormonal transitions especially, this seasonal shift can amplify what's already going on in the body. Reflexology won't change the season, but it can give you somewhere to land within it, an hour where nothing is asked of you, and your body is simply allowed to settle.
Clients often tell me that what they notice most isn't just physical ease, but a kind of emotional exhale. A sense of ‘I feel open again’.
A Small Ritual for the Equinox
You don't need a treatment room to mark this moment. Try this at home:
1. Light a candle in the early evening, as the dark draws in earlier
2. Sit quietly for a few minutes and notice what in your life feels ready to be released, like leaves falling from a tree
3. Ask yourself gently: what do I want to carry forward into the darker months?
There's no right answer. It's simply a moment of noticing.
Ready to Find Your Own Balance?
If this season has you feeling pulled in too many directions, a Reflexology or Reiki session might be exactly the pause you need. I offer appointments from my peaceful garden studio in Bankfoot, and on Saturdays at Perth Yoga Studios in the city centre.
Love,
Michelle
